A Brief History

In the year 2001, Sparx and Lorenzo Antonio decided that they wanted to do something to express their thanks to the New Mexico community that has shown them so much support throughout their careers. They have always believed that a good education is very important in order to excel in life. After long discussions, they decided that they wanted to create a scholarship for New Mexico students.

Sparx and Lorenzo Antonio knew that they would need help with this project. They approached APS (Albuquerque Public Schools) with their idea and thanks to the acting superintendent, Mr. Joseph M. Vigil, APS generously offered their support. At that moment, the Sparx & Lorenzo Antonio Scholarship was born!

In the beginning, there were 10 Scholarships available, each worth $4000.00, and the Scholarship was solely for graduating Albuquerque Public School high school students. Today, the Scholarship has grown to encompass any graduating New Mexico public high school student, and the number of Scholarships awarded for the year 2009 was 54, each worth between $2000.00 to $8000.00. To date, 192 Sparx & Lorenzo Antonio Scholarships have been awarded to New Mexico Students, worth more than $500,000.00!

Beginning in 2002, Sparx and Lorenzo Antonio have held a yearly concert in order to raise funds and to create awareness for their Scholarship. Thanks to all of the people who have attended, along with all of the sponsors, individuals, and organizations involved, their yearly fundraiser concert has become one of the most successful events in New Mexico history.

2003 was the first year that the Sparx & Lorenzo Antonio Scholarship was awarded to students. Every year since then, Sparx and Lorenzo Antonio hold their official Scholarship Presentation to award students their Scholarships. Here is what some of the recipients have said about how the Sparx & Lorenzo Antonio Scholarship will affect their future, and what it will help them accomplish:

“Each year we receive more and more application forms from students who genuinely want and deserve a college education. Our goal is to be able to continue helping New Mexico students lessen the financial burden of a higher education so that they can attend college."

The 2010 Scholarship application forms are available now, and any graduating New Mexico public high school student can apply.

Sparx and Lorenzo Antonio would like to thank everyone who helped make the Sparx & Lorenzo Antonio Scholarship a success, and they wish all of the Scholarship recipients a bright, academic future.
